Hot Tubs with Children — Safety Rules and Tips
A hot tub is great family fun, but when using it with children, you need to be extra careful. Children's bodies react to hot water differently than adults', and there are hazards in a hot tub that you should be aware of. In this article, we cover everything parents need to know.
Age Restrictions
- 0–4 years: Not suitable for a hot tub. Too hot and too deep.
- 5–7 years: Allowed only at lower temperatures (max 35°C) and for short periods (10–15 minutes at a time). Constant adult supervision is mandatory.
- 8–12 years: Allowed up to 37°C, for up to 20 minutes at a time. An adult must be present at all times.
- 13+ years: May use the hot tub like adults, though supervision is recommended.
Temperature Rules
This is the most important rule when using a hot tub with children. Children's bodies cannot regulate overheating as well as adults'.
- Adults: 37–40°C (max 42°C)
- Children 8–12: Max 37°C
- Children 5–7: Max 35°C
Always use a thermometer! Estimating water temperature by hand is not accurate enough. If children have red faces, are drowsy, or complain of headache — get them out immediately!
Basic Safety Rules
🚫 Never Leave Children Unsupervised
This is an absolute rule. Even if the children can swim. Even "just for a moment." A hot tub has warm water and depth — the risk of drowning is real. At least one adult must be by the hot tub at all times.
🔥 The Stove Is Dangerous!
The hot tub stove is burning hot and children must stay well away from it. Position the stove so that children's movement paths don't pass by it. Explain to children that they must not touch the stove or chimney.
⏱️ Limit the Time
Children should not spend longer in the hot tub than:
- 5–7 years: Max 10–15 minutes at a time
- 8–12 years: Max 15–20 minutes at a time
Take breaks! Let children get out of the tub, cool down, and drink water before going back in.
💧 Hydration
Hot water causes sweating that you don't notice. Children dehydrate faster. Always keep drinking water within reach and offer children something to drink regularly.
Fun Activities with Children
A hot tub doesn't have to be just a place for "sitting." There's plenty of fun to be had with children:
- Waterproof toys — small balls, rubber ducks
- Storytelling circle — everyone tells their funniest story
- Stargazing — the sky is beautiful from an evening hot tub
- Music and singing — a wireless speaker at a safe distance
- Counting bubbles — in the large hot tub with the bubble system
Which Hot Tub for Children?
For children, we recommend the small hot tub. The reasons:
- Lower water level — safer for smaller children
- Smaller volume — cools down faster if the water is too hot
- More compact — easier supervision
- More affordable — from €40/24h
The large hot tub is suitable when there's also a larger group of adults alongside the children.
When NOT to Use a Hot Tub
- The child is sick (fever, diarrhoea, skin problems)
- The child is tired or drowsy
- The child has just eaten (wait at least 30 minutes)
- The child is afraid of water — don't force them
- A thunderstorm is approaching
Summary
A hot tub with children is fantastic family fun when you follow the safety rules. Three golden rules: correct temperature, constant supervision, limited time. This way everyone can enjoy themselves and nobody gets hurt.
